A NEW LOOK AT THE ŞİNASİ BARUTÇU CUP

This is a different exhibition. An exhibition of the history of Şinasi Barutçu Cup, which started 32 years ago and is one of the oldest and deep-rooted photography events of our country.

The Şinasi Barutçu Cup is a called print photography contest launched by FOTOGEN in 1988. In fact, we haven't had enough to say "competition" ever since. The Şinasi Barutçu Cup, which will express the concepts of "event" or "exhibition" better.

Of course, a lot has changed in our world of photography since 1988. Most importantly, digital photography has entered our lives. "Print" competitions gradually gave way to digital competitions. But the Şinasi Barutçu Cup has not changed and has come to these days as a printing activity.

So much so, when we had difficulty in gathering the Selection Committee due to the pandemic conditions last year, we thought whether we should hold the meeting online or not. No! It was a print contest and the selection committee had to see the photo prints. Thus, we had to hold the selection committee meeting until the bans were relaxed.

So, who is invited to the 3-year marathon of the Şinasi Barutçu Cup? As a result of an extensive research conducted by the FOTOGEN Board of Directors every year, photographers who stand out in photography activities held in different regions of our country are investigated and those deemed appropriate are invited to the Cup. The number of invitations each year will complete the total participation to 12. In other words, there are 12 participants in all tours every year.

While determining the participants to be invited, efforts are made to select candidates from outside the metropolises where photographers are concentrated, and to protect the balance between men and women as much as possible. In addition to young talents who are deemed worthy of encouragement, senior and well-known photographers are also featured, and they are desired to be side by side in the exhibition to be opened.

In the "A New Look at the Şinasi Barutçu Cup" exhibition that you will watch a little later, there are 105 new photographs of our 35 photographers who have won the Şinasi Barutçu Cup since 1990. With two exceptions: Adnan Veli Kuvanlık, whom we lost very early in 2008, and Tuğrul Çakar, whom we lost untimely in 2017. We host these two friends to our exhibition with their trophy photos. With respect to his memories ...

This exhibition includes new photographs of our friends who have taken the Şinasi Barutçu Cup for 30 years; when read together with the original Cup photos of our same friends on the www.fotogen.org.tr web page; we think it will give important clues about ...

• The change of our country's photograph over time and,

• The travel of the photographers in the exhibition through time.

This exhibition, which we think will contribute to the recording of our country's visual memory, was suggested by our friend Ahmet Sabuncu during the online cup event this year. We thank him.

FOTOGEN Boards of Directors, which have been organizing the cup with great devotion for 32 years without interrupting the cup, to all the participants who have participated in the Cup since 1988 and have made such a photo inventory today; We would like to thank the Cup Secretaries, who dealt with all the details, and the selection committees who have contributed to the current level of the Şinasi Barutçu Cup for 32 years, without expecting any response, only for the development of the art of photography.

Finally, we would like to express our gratitude to the Turkish Federation of Photography Art and its President, Dr.Sefa Ulukan, who made us realize this exhibition by opening the TFSF / FIAP Online Gallery.

Good viewing…
