Biography
Tahsin Ceylan was born in Diyarbakır in 1959. He is a passionate and committed underwater photographer for 25 year now and an underwater videographer since 1997 following his acquaintance of underwater sports in 1986.
Although his work is predominantly about underwater environment of Turkey and its territorial waters, he has performed innumerable dives for underwater imaging purposes in Red Sea, Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean.
Tahsin Ceylan staged thirteen personal photo exhibitions with titles like Mavi Derinliklerin Gizemi (Mystery of The Blue Depths), Sualtından Türkiye(Turkey from Underwater), Denizin Ruhu (Spirit Of The Sea, EngelSizsiniz (You Are Without Disabilities/You Are The Disability), Akdenizde Nesli Tehlike Altında Olan Türler (Endangered Species in Mediterranean) and 100.Yılında 100 Fotoğrafla Sualtından Çanakkale (100 Photographs of Çanakkale At Its Centenary), Gemlik Körfezi’nin Sualtı Yaşamı (Underwater Life of Gemlik Bay), 17 Ağustos & Derinlerdeki Acı (August 17th & Grief at Depts )thru which he provided enlightenment for the mysterious underwater world that mankind have always been curious about.
In Turkey first underwater footages of Mediterranean Monk Seals, Sea Horses and Sharks in their natural environment were taken by Tahsin Ceylan, who possesses over 100 awards from national and international underwater imaging contests. The sea horse which he photographed in Kaş-Antalya in 2005 and named “Princess” was awarded Special Jury Prize in the Seahorses of the World (US) contest and was on exhibition during May-July 2007 in London as one of the best 10 seahorse photographs in the world.
Tahsin Ceylan’s “Denizin Ruhu” ( Soul of the sea) photo exhibition that is composed of his 73 artwork, sponsored by TAV was first held in 2011 and is still on show circulating the local airports in Turkey. His second exhibition that is intended for juvenile and sponsored by Neomarin and Ece Group is on show at Turkuazoo Aquarium-Istanbul. And finally “Denizin Ruhu- Mediterranean Underwater Photography Exhibition”, that is supported by Middle East Technical University, which aims to help the education of youngsters about sea world in on show at Erdemli-Mersin.
International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) published the underwater images provided by Tahsin Ceylan in their 2011 Red List of Mediterranean Fish.
The Black Sea Box, which was prepared by the coordination of World Wildlife Foundation (WWF) published in 6 countries and in 6 different languages that contains information about the ecosystems and biodiversity of the Black Sea also contains the underwater images provided by him.
The Black Sea Box was chosen as one of the best 10 application over the world by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and during EXPO 2012 held in South Korea it was displayed at UNDP stand.
The theme of the Expo 2012 was “The Living Ocean and Coast” with subthemes of “Preservation and Sustainable Development of the Ocean and Coast,” “New Resources Technology,” and “Creative Marine Activities.” And Turkey’s coast and underwater environment was introduced by Tahsin Ceylan’s footage.
His latest underwater images related to endangered species met with underwater enthusiasts during MEDEX 2013 exhibition that was held at CNR Expo in Istanbul. Turkey’s underwater film named ““LIFE IN THE SEAS AND COASTS OF TURKEY” was, again, prepared by international photography artist Tahsin Ceylan.
Besides the promotional video of Turkey’s underwater environment, Underwater Photography artist Tahsin Ceylan also published “Denizleri Tanıyalım I ve II” (Getting to Know the Sea I&II) with Prof. Dr. Şükran Cirik, and “Denizlerimizin Sakinleri” (Residents of Our Seas) with Dr. Bülent Gözcelioğlu. The latest book he contributed as an author is “Yaşayan Deniz” (The Living Sea). His other publication about “The Video Usage” is used as textbook at the Anadolu University, Faculty of Communication.

Holds World Underwater Federation (CMAS) and Turkish Underwater Sports Federation (TSSF) 3 star instructor, Life Saving Instructor, PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer and Emergency First Response Instructor ranks,
Is the instructor of underwater criminology and search and rescue teams of Ankara Fire Department and Special Operations Department,
Is Head of Environmental and Technical Diving Committees and Member of Education Comittee of Turkish Underwater Sports Federation,
Acts as the Imaging Coordinator for Ecological Research Society (EKAD) besides his duties as a member of the editorial board for Marine Photo, Naviga, Deniz Magazin, Vira, Sahil Güvenlik magazines. His articles are also published on the Hurriyet newspaper’s supplement named “Seyahat” on travel, ecology and biology topics.
He also acted as Director of Photography/Videography and consultant for “Mavi Tutku” an underwater documentary, “Fozi” an underwater documentary with children as focus group and “Şahika’nın Mavi Dünyası” another underwater documentary which are broadcasted by Turkish Radio and Television Corporation (TRT).
